DEVELOPMENT AND FACILITATION

The Lab

a product development lab

2015, facilitator & designer
→ CONDÉ NASt

I developed and facilitated a product making lab with the brilliant guys at Condé Nast (Wired, Vogue, GQ, Glamour...), to explore making, failing and testing big ideas.

Backstory
We (Krischan Lehmann, Strategy Director of Condé Nast and I) where curious about what would happen if we created a safe space where we tapped into the knowledge of a very diverse group of people from all over the company and just made stuff happen without any limitations.

Finding and building a team

Even tough we got handed some crazy goals from high above, we didn't only go with the people with the obvious fitting track records, as we could be wasting untapped opportunities to help create confidence in those perceived themselves as "not so creative" - we believe that open minds and diverse perespectives is the key to solving problems.

I designed a voice and a brand, and we made it a big deal internally and made sure that everybody knew that this was not for the chosen few, by making an open application and make it a very transparent thing, see → thelab.condenast.de

EXPERIENCE DESIGN

Wired.de

what wired on a screen is in germany

2014, EXPERIENCE DESIGNER
→ CONDÉ NAST

I helped Wired launch in Germany by developing the foundation for how its readers experience and interact with it on screen.

Check it out → wired.de

We focused on creating a simple and calm experience by focusing on how content was delivered and exploring a contextually relevant content delivery system and the joy of discovering stuff like in the printed magazine.

Constant prototyping and stripping it down to the core (the content) was vital as we prepared Wired to run a marathon, not a sprint.

Side note – A personal win was killing the traditional banner ad by rethinking its meaning.

Skype Chat

making a Skype quicker

2013, creative
→ hyper island, dropbox

“What if Skype invented instant messaging today?”
At Hyper Island, we helped Skype figure out ways the instant messaging side of Skype could be more expressive for the young folks without messing with the simpleness and the diverse group of users.
WHAT WE LEARNED
Emoticons and “stickers” aren’t really enough to be and fell connected, while starting a Skype session might a solution it can also be a bit over the top for quick interactions and an even tougher job if you're timezones apart.
WHAT WE MADE
Something in-between a Skype call and a text based messenger, something where your conversation still are alive and makes sense timezones later, something like Skype or like Snapchat but not really; an asynchronous video messenger tied together with a straightforward, replay-able and make-sensible timeline to be as close to a face-to-face conversation as possible.

Skype later made the product and called it Skype Qik.

Space for Tigers

a way for dropbox to make space for more than files

2013, creative
→ hyper island, dropbox

A big reason wild tigers are getting extinct is that deforestation is making their living space smaller every day. So we asked ourselves, who got space to spare?

Dropbox premium users have plenty of space. So we came up with an idea that transforms gigabytes into square feet. Letting premium Dropbox users donate their unused space which then would be resold to other users and raise money to protect the natural habitat of the last remaining tigers.

– Space can be donated directly from the ad.
